Meet your workshop facilitators:

Lisa Alton, RP (she/her)

I seek to help clients remove barriers to access their innate wisdom and potential. I do this mainly using the Internal Family Systems model, and influenced by other models I previously trained in (Narrative Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, EMDR, ACT). Outside of counselling, you can find me biking around on my e-bike, singing in choir or hosting friends for dinner.

Kaelin Sheaden, CCC-S (she/her)

I work with individuals in my private practice, emerge counselling, using primarily the Internal Family Systems model. I have over 20 years of experience working with groups and am delighted to be bringing this model to a group setting. You can learn more about me and my practice here.

This Introduction to IFS workshop for counsellors is a collaboration between Lisa Alton RP and Kaelin Sheaden CCC-S of Emerge Counselling.

We are both passionate about this model and the possibility it offers in group settings - for connection, learning, and personal growth. Lisa and Kaelin – both IFS trained level 2 therapists, also have years of experience facilitating therapy groups and are excited to offer IFS to the community, in creative and experiential ways.

Who is this group for? Counsellors, social workers, psychologists, healers, therapists, helpers and the like who have heard of IFS and may know a little about it, but are curious to learn more and get a felt-sense of the model. Participants do not need to have any previous IFS knowledge or experience.

NOTE: This workshop is not intended to be an IFS training that teaches participants how to use the model with their clients.

Please read the FAQs below to learn more:

If this is not an IFS therapy training, then why is it aimed towards counsellors/ healers?

Great question! We offered a 4-week IFS group this winter and so many therapists in the community wanted to join as participants, so we thought, “why not create a unique workshop with this affinity in mind?” The idea is that you still get to come and learn and play and be fully immersed in the role of participant, but you’ll be in a group with others who have a foundational knowledge about wellness, our inner-selves and the impacts of trauma.

I’m a therapist and have a fair amount of training and experience with IFS. This workshop sounds like fun although as I’m not brand new to the model I wonder if it is the right fit for me?

The workshop will be aimed towards those who are either very new to IFS, or have only a little bit of knowledge. Therefore, if you chose to attend, there would likely be a fair amount of review. Having said that, participating in experientials and learning about our own “systems” and parts is life long and that despite one’s previous knowledge, one can still find deep value in the practice. In summary, it is up to you. You and all your parts are absolutely welcome, but just keep in mind that the workshop is designed as an introduction to the model.

It’s a pretty small town, and because all the participants are in helping professions, I assume I’ll be connected to some of them. I know the workshop isn’t exactly therapy, so will that be okay?

Yes! In fact, we assume we’ll know many of you as well. The workshop will be a combination of different experiential exercises with the aim of “getting to know” one or more parts of yourself, as well as a brief amount of didactic teaching. Some sharing after an exercise may be invited, however all sharing will be 100% optional, and the focus of it will be on what you experienced in the exercise internally, rather than on details from your external life - either past or present.

Is this group open to all genders?

Yes, absolutely.

I read there will be a catered lunch - tell me more.

A local catering business will provide us with a hot lunch. Vegetarian and most other dietary needs can be accommodated - there is a field on the registration form where you can indicate these details.

What should I wear and what should I bring?

Feel free to wear relaxed and comfortable clothing. You may wish to bring a journal and slippers.

What is your cancellation policy?

We will accept cancellations up to 1 week before the event - April 20th, 2024, at no cost to you.

Unfortunately, we will be unable to issue a refund if you cancel less than 1 week before the event.
